Definition of Childhood Cancer

  • Any uncontrolled growth or proliferation of abnormal cells results in a tumor.
  • Not all tumors are cancerous.
  • Therefore a tumor can be benign (non-cancerous ) or malignant(cancerous)
  • Benign lesions do not spread to distant sites (metastasise) but can cause problems by spreading locally or disturbing function.
  • Cancer can spread locally as well as to distant sites. It can occur in any organ or tissue in the body and is named after the type of organ from which it arises.
  • Generally cancers are divided into those that arise from solid organs such as liver, kidneys and those that arise from blood and lymphoid tissue or leukemia/ lymphoma
